1981 All-Star Weekend
The
1981 GCCBA All Star game was held in Las Vegas today, and what an
event it was! It was the clash of the titans all the way, with
the brightest stars of the GCCBA and the best basketball players
on the planet all assembled onto one basketball court, and both
coaches agreed that in order to properly showcase this talent, no
player would play more than 30 minutes or less than 12 in this
game, and both sides would play it safe on defense for much of the
game.
As for the game itself, the voted in starters were Nixon, DJ, Dr
J, English, and Moses for the East, and Free, Iceman, Dantley,
Bird, and Gilmore for the West. The West got off to a 16-10 lead
in the first 6 minutes before the starters came out. The East had
trouble getting their fast break going, turning it over a few
times. Larry Bird led the scoring in the early going, getting 6
pts. But Eddie Johnson came in on fire for the East and kept it
close, scoring 8 pts in the last 6 minutes of the first period.
But the West, with Phil Ford leading the way, scored 10 pts on the
break to match the East, and after one, it was 32-26 West.
The second quarter saw the East come back and take the lead 45-43
with over 7 minutes to play till halftime. Norm Nixon scored three
straight fast break baskets to give the East that lead, and in
fact, Nixon scored all 10 of his points in this game over a 2
minute span. But then the two players representing the Dakota
Warriors, Dantley and Knight, score 16 pts combined over the
remainder of the quarter and with the West up 58-57, they score
the last 11 pts of the period to lead the East at the half 69-57.
Billy Knight scores 9 points in the last 1:36 of the half and
leads the West at halftime with 13 points on 6-7 shooting. The
East shot just 49% in the first half compared to a sizzling 67%
for the West. Phil Ford had 10 points to give the West their other
double figure scorer, and the East was led in the first half by
Eddie Johnson and Norm Nixon, each with 10 points.
The starters of the game came back out for the third quarter, and
once again the West starters dominated the East starters,
extending the lead to 87-65 before the reserves came into the game
at the 6 minute mark. So during the 12 minutes that the West
starters faced the East starters, the West outscored them 36-18.
Free, who had just 4 pts at the half, scores 8 pts in the first 6
minutes of the second half. With the reserves playing, the East
cut that 22 pt lead down to 12 by the end of the third period,
thanks mostly to Tiny Archibald spearheading the East fast break.
At the end of three it was the West 101, East 89.
The fourth quarter saw
the big men start to assert themselves. Relatively quiet for most
of the game, Moses, Kareem, Gilmore and Parish score 34 of the 80
total points between the teams in the fourth. The East tried to
come back, as a 3 pt play by English made it 107-99 West with 10
minutes to go. Moses was a beast inside, scoring 15 pts in the
quarter. Kareem came in for Moses with 6 to go and scored 9 points
himself, and the two formed a "twin towers" combo in the last two
minutes. But Lloyd Free scored 10 points in the last 4 minutes to
counteract the Easts' beasts and in the end, the West wins this
one 144-126.
The MVP of the game was handed to Free, as he scores a team-high
22 points for the West and only misses one shot, going 9-10 from
the field and 4-4 from the line. Free actually played the least
minutes of any of the 10 starters for either team, only going for
20 minutes, as the West had sufficient depth at his position and
everyone had to get their chance to shine. No player in this game
played more than 28 minutes or less than 12.
Other notable performances in this game were by Billy Knight, who
ended up with 18 pts on 8-9 shooting in just 13 minutes. Had he
played more, he probably would have been the MVP. Dantley was the
West's #2 scorer with 17 pts in 25 minutes. Gilmore, the hometown
favorite, and Iceman each score 16. King, Ford, and Bird all had
10 points, and Sugar Ray Richardson had 9 assists in 21 minutes.
The West shot 66% and scored 52 points on the break.
The East led the way inside behind Kareems' sky hook and Moses'
relentlessness with 58 points in the paint to 42 for the West.
Moses led all scorers with 25 points, and Kareem was next with 19.
Eddie Johnson scored 15, Marques Johnson 12, and Dr J and Nixon
each had 10. The latter two didnt play particularly well, however.
Dr J shoots just 4-12 from the field and Stormin' Norman wasnt
exactly a good point guard on this day, with 1 assist and 7
turnovers. Two other East starters, English and DJ, were quiet,
scoring just 17 pts between them and English added 6 turnovers.
Tiny Archibald made a strong case that he should have started at
point guard for the East, scoring 9 pts and handing out 9 dimes
with no turnovers in 19 minutes off the bench.
So that concludes our wrap-up of the 1981 GCCBA All Star game. The
West had just a little bit more firepower than the East did,
particularly on the perimeter, and they seem to have the better
teams and thus the better overall talent than the East does this
year. The West starters outplayed the East starters, and that was
the key difference of the game.

Arby's 3-Point Shootout
The ARBY'S 3-POINT SHOOTOUT
sponsored by the Beef N' Cheddar took place Saturday night in
Caesars Palace. While largely seen as the opening act to the
main event of the dunk contest, the SHOOTOUT did feature some
drama.
First up was Palos' Michael Ray Richardson, who managed to hit
just 4 of his 25 shots. Two were money balls, leaving Richardson
with 6 points total, and in tears. Raytown's Joe Hassett was up
next, firing consistantly from each of the five spots on the
floor and racking up 16 points on 12 made shots (2 money balls).
Alex English was signed up to go next, but there was a slight
delay as English was in the middle of hot streak at the black
jack table. English ran into the gym, threw up a bunch of shots
(making seven, for 8 points), and then ran back to the card
game.
The next three shooters, Henry Bibby, Brian Winters, and Freeman
Williams, each posted 10 points (2 money balls each), creating a
3-way tie for third. The final shooter of the first round was
hometown favorite Marty Byrnes. Byrnes started off en fuego,
hitting 9 of his first 10 -- he had 11 points and had clinched a
spot in the finals even before he reached the third rack of
balls. His hot shooting continued, and Byrnes ended up with 21
points total.
ROUND ONE RESULTS: Richardson 6, Hassett 16, English 8, Bibby
10, Winters 10, Williams 10, Byrnes 21.
As the crowd was entertained by dancing girls in curly fry
costumes, Hassett and Byrnes met on the sidelines to wish each
other luck. Hassett was up first, and hit 7 of his first 10
shots, then cooled off before hitting his final three shots for
a total of 15. The crowd rose to its feet in anticipation of
another sharpshooting display by the hometown marksman. Byrnes
stepped up and promptly hit just one shot from the first rack,
and none from the second. With a look of panic, Byrnes raced to
the third rack and dropped three in a row, then three more from
the fourth rack to pull within striking distance. To the last
rack... YES! YES! No... no... crap... Your 1981 ARBYS THREE
POINT SHOOTOUT CHAMPION... Joe Hassett of Raytown.
Hassett and Bill Waterman (Assitant Manager of Arbys store no.
314 -- Boulder Hwy. location) met at midcourt, where Hassett was
given a crappy-looking trophy, a Buy One Get One Free coupon at
the Caesars buffet, and a card good for free Jamocha shakes for
a month. Meanwhile, Byrnes was so distraught at his choke job
that he threw up. Whether it was just the pressure, or that
Hassett's teammate Harvey Catchings took advantage of a
distracted Byrnes and "slipped him a mickey" old school Vegas
style between rounds could not be confirmed.
Slam Dunk Contest Sponsored by RC Cola
THE 1981 GCCBA ALL-STAR SLAM DUNK CONTEST
SPONSORED BY RC COLA (GASSDCSBRCC for short)
Following the 3-point shootout, and following the clean up of
Marty Byrnes' vomit (see 3-point shootout results), the Caesars
Palace Arena (just 45 steps from the nearest slot machine) was
abuzz as the competitors made their way to the floor.
But first, our judges for tonight's event: The child stars of
Diff'rent Strokes, Gary Coleman, Todd Bridges and Dana Plato!!!
(**Bridges and Plato disappeared soon after arriving in Vegas,
leaving Coleman to do all the judging.)
The first contestant of the night: Ohio's Sam Macy, the 6-3
guard who somewhat affectionatly became known as "Sparky" by his
teammates. Macy, always the ladies man, went into the crowd and
picked out a sexy cheerleader type and, after trying to slip her
his room key, brought her out to the floor to help him with his
dunk...
(unfortunately, the English audio went out during this dunk, so
we have to revert to the Russian simulcast...)

After leaving the court to a chorus of boos, next up was
Raytown's Bernard King. King, perhaps missing the point of the
contest, or else just taking it to the next level, brought out
five or six hired actors to participate in the dunk with him...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ernB4YGtD78
The scores so far, per Gary Coleman:
Bernard King -- 7
Sam Macy -- negative 4
Elvin Hayes -- too busy playing Keno to participate
Next up:
George Gervin of Palos, Larry Kenon of Ft Worth, Artis Gilmore
of Vegas, David Thompson of Sacremento, and Julius Erving of
Massachusetts.

And finishing off round one, Darryl Dawkins of Cleveland.......
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcFLo8jVCF4&feature=related
Following Dawkins' dunk, a p.o.'d Willis Williams (general
manager of Caesars Palace) took the house mic and said the dunk
contest was over and Dawkins owed him $5,000 for a new
backboard. A stunned crowd booed, and Gary Coleman said "Whatchu
talking about Willis?" Later, while in line at the dinner
buffet, Coleman would declare Julius Erving of Mass Chaos the
winner of the 1981 Dunk Contest (GASSDCSBRCC). Dr. J won a case
of RC Cola and three tickets to the Wayne Newton show.

All Star Game Rules
VOTING
I have created a thread on the forum called "All-Star Voting".
Use this to see the rules, eligible players, and how to vote.
(Jason's all-star ballot on this site was having technical
problems, so unfortunately you will have to send me an e-mail
with your votes. Remember to vote for starters AND reserves at
each position, for each conference.) Voting will end at noon CST
on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11, with rosters announced soon thereafter.
If enough votes come in early, I will send out a vote count
midway through the voting period. No ballot box stuffing
allowed!!
PLAYING THE GAME
NBA rules state that the two conference coaches with the best
winning percentage coach the All-Star game. Therefore, I am
inviting the coaches of Philadelphia and Memphis to play the
1981 All-Star game via Netplay, sometime as close to February 17
as possible. If you guys would prefer, I will take the West and
someone can volunteer to coach the East. My only requirement is
that I can only play netplay around noon CST on a weekday. If
neither of these options works out, I will play the game
solitaire and give a full report with box score afterward.
SLAM DUNK CONTEST
What would All-Star weekend be without a dunk contest?? Each
team is allowed to nominate one player from their team to
participate. Results of the dunk contest will be based largely
on whatever videos I can find on youtube. If you have any links
to videos of your players (or others) dunking, I'd appreciate
receiving them.
THREE-POINT SHOOTOUT
If you have a player on your squad worthy of partipation in this
long-range affair (i.e. shoots 3's and makes them sometimes),
please nominate him for the contest. I will actually attempt to
conduct this using dice and the player's 3-point shooting
column. Yes, we will even have the money ball.
