PLAY-BY-PLAY INSTRUCTIONS
The play-by-play system has been updated to allow you to enter your own play
descriptions. It will take a little while to get used to the cryptic system
employed by the program, but once mastered entering a play description is
easily accomplished.
The file where this play-by-play resides is "Userpbp.fil" for normal
play-by-play or "Baxter.fil" FOR maximum play-by-play both located in the
C:\SOMBKW\PBP
directory on your hard drive. You should edit the file with windows notebook
or another text editor that can create files in ASCII format with lines
greater than 80 characters in length.
The best way to learn the system is to look at a couple of samples to
decipher how the substitution system works. The key to the substitution
system is the character @. Whenever you see this character you can refer to
the substitution chart found below for an explanation.
The ID is the basic description of this play, the "12345" is the positions
eligible for this play account (1=Point Guard, 2=Shooting Guard, 3=Small
Forward, 4=Power Forward, 5=Center), and the "PCT" column lists the
percentage of time the play description should be used when a match has been
found.
ID 12345 PCT PLAY DESCRIPTION
01 00001 010 The free is up@JIt rolls around@JAnd it drops in for the big
guy.
Using the charts below we will now decode the sample listed above. The
sample lists a free throw made (ID=01) by a center (because there is a 1
under position 5), and this play description should be used 10% of the time
when a match is found. In the body of the description the @J means to pause
a second and then go to a a new line.

In these columns are either a 1 or a 0 for each position. A 1 indicates that
the player in the column is eligible for this play description. A 0
indicates that the player in the column is not eligible for this play
description.
PCT
---
Under the PCT column is a number from 001 to 100. This number indicates the
percentage of time to use this play by play when the other columns match the
current play result. IMPORTANT: If a play is not selected from the
Userpbp.fil then the play by play will default to the Strat-O-Matic defined
plays (this is the same play descriptions from Version 5.0 of the game).
***IMPORTANT NOTE***: In the following two sections (SUBSTITUTION CHART and
MODIFIERS) be aware that the program is case sensitive. For instance, "@J"
must be used for a new line, not "@j".
SUBSTITUTION CHART
------------------
This chart is the key to defining your own plays. Before defining a play
description there are certain limitations you must understand. First, the
longest line supported in the USERPBP.FIL is 250 characters, so all play
descriptions must be less than this limit. If you exceed 250 characters in a
given line then the game might hang or otherwise malfunction. Secondly, the
longest length before an @J (new line) character is 49 bytes. Be sure not to
exceed this length either.

IMPORTANT NOTE
--------------
In certain play by play-by-play categories (such as 50, 58 and 81) you will
have to use @2 instead of @6 to describe the player with the ball. Since
there is not "shooter" or "passer" in these categories the program uses @2
to indicate the player in control of the ball.
PLAY BY PLAY MODIFIERS
